Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times club listings for abundant source material!
Gray skies and cooler temps arrived right on schedule with the summer solstice, but it looks like Sunday’s weather will be perfect for the Pride Parade. Whether or not there is a deity who controls those kind of details, I believe they smile on people being who they are and loving who they love. I hope we can all smile on a good band name, such as this week’s picks:
Perfect for Pride season: we are all worthy and to be celebrated, as we are.
The hero’s horse rarely gets enough credit, even if it can fly. (This is the show I most wish I could get to. They’re on a bill with Square Pig faves Mud on My Bra and local legend Kurt Bloch is their guitarist!)
Is it a lizard? A dragon? Or something completely new?
Should these words be seen together? Those hot, sunny days right before the solstice felt out of season. It’s reassuring to see the return of June Gloom, though I’m glad it will be nice for the parade.
Another one that feels appropriate for Pride season. There are more wavelengths we can’t see than those we can, and they are just as valid.
