Square Pig in a Round Hole-December 31, 2022

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!

My last post of the year has often been a retrospective, due to fewer live shows over the holidays. That does not seem to be the case in 2022! New Year’s Eve on a Saturday might have something to do with that, or maybe nothing is like it once was anymore. Whatever the reason, I’m happy to provide a fresh batch of band names to close out the year, and I resolve to continue this weekly treasure hunt in 2023.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we perhaps move into less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

The Barbaras
This band and I seem to be entangled without knowing it! About a decade ago, around the time their only album was released, I was planning a short story about a teenage girl so shy and uninteresting, she was functionally invisible. She needed an extremely ordinary name, common but not fashionable in her age group. I chose to call her Barbara. In the novel that grew out of that story, Barbara started a garage band and gained superpowers. There is power in the name.

Nude Consumer
Honest and transparent, but might get you kicked out of the store.

The Oh Wells
I was surprised I’d never featured this band before; I must have always assumed I already had. My mom had a good friend for whom “Oh well” was the standard response to anything not going according to plan. She used it so often when the family was building a cabin, it became the name of the house. A good attitude to bring to any kind of live performance.

Rank and Vile
The wordplay is strong with this one! The profound stench of the ordinary.

Skipping Victor
So delighted to have won, they can’t contain themselves to a mere walk.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. Next one comes out in January! (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
