Square Pig in a Round Hole-November 26, 2022

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!

I emerge from Thanksgiving filled with gratitude. I was already in a good mood from selling 11 paperbacks at last weekend’s Underground Holiday Market. Then I woke up Thanksgiving Day to a publishing contract from Not A Pipe Publishing for my hard sci-fi workplace rom-com/survival story in space, Ego & Endurance. This is a book I started writing in 2010, polished up during the pandemic, and submitted a few days after the discovery of the ship Endurance at the bottom of the ocean. We’ve been through a lot together and I am thrilled to launch this story out of my head and into yours.

In other cool news, the band names just don’t quit! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we perhaps move into less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

Baby Crow Flight School
Cute, funny, and an accurate observation of corvid behavior. As a species, crows are intelligent, but just like humans, their juveniles can make dumb choices on the way to being competent adults (if they survive the dumb choices). They need instruction and practice.

Bad News Botanists
Bringing sad tidings of invasive and toxic species in your garden.

Liquid Stranger
This is a cat, right? Pouring itself into your lap but never allowing itself to be truly known.

LoftRiot
A very contained brawl, until it spills over the railing.

The Weather Machine
A popular sci-fi device that would have to have unintended consequences. But would it be worse than what we’re doing now?

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
