Square Pig in a Round Hole-November 19, 2022

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Believe it or not, holidays are upon us! Thanksgiving is next week, in case you missed the memo like I almost did. Today, Saturday, November 19 from noon to 5 pm, I will be the Underground Holiday Market at Shoreline City Hall, selling my books from the Author Event Network booth. If you’re in the neighborhood, come say hi and do your Christmas shopping!

Meanwhile, I offer an early holiday gift of band names, for which I am ever thankful. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we perhaps move into less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

Checker Bloom
That miraculous moment when you’re waiting in line to pay for your Thanksgiving groceries and all the check stands are suddenly open.

Conversation Pit
Now I’m nostalgic for shag carpeting and bell bottoms. Far out.

Let’s Eat Grandma
Just in time for Thanksgiving, a reminder that punctuation saves lives.

Letters from Traffic
When the gridlock is so bad, not only is it safe to text but you might as well get out the good stationery and fountain pen to let folks know you’ll be late for Thanksgiving dinner.

Spit Puddle
Brass players will assure it’s condensation. You still don’t want to step in it in stocking feet.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
