Square Pig in a Round Hole-August 27, 2022

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Last night, I went out (!) to an indoor event (!!) and read in front of a live, in-person audience (!!!) for the first time since early 2020. Folks were pretty good about masking, so I felt reasonably comfortable, and it was a good show of words and music for a good cause. Excerpts from my young adult garage-rock/superhero mashup novel Barbara and the Rage Brigade were an even better fit than I expected! And we raised about $400 for the Northwest Abortion Access Fund. If you feel like donating, please mention Couth Buzzard Books Espresso Buono Cafe, hosts and venue for the event.

On with the band names! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we look forward to less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

Cat Positive
I’ve been catless for over 6 months, but I’m sure if I took a test, it would still come back positive. The felines of the internet are all mine now.

Creeping Death
Has that B-movie vibe I love. Ominous horror, but the monster is played by a fuzzy bathmat.

Filth is Eternal
No matter how often you clean your house, to dust you shall return.

Moon Fever
I’ve had a thing for the moon most of my life. Never thought of it as an illness, but hmmm. (By my count, this is the 31st moon-themed band name to make the blog!)

Mount Planet
Up in the high places, it’s like its own world.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
