Square Pig in a Round Hole-December 20, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Here we go, sliding into Christmas week! If you’re the type who orders gifts at the last minute to be delivered after the day, have I got a coupon code for you. For the rest of December, anyone who buys a book (like one of mine?) from the Not A Pipe Publishing online shop and uses the code DecemberWriter at checkout will get $5 off a shirt, sweatshirt, or hat in the clothing category on the site. Find the shop HERE. (I used it to get a copy of Fortunate Son by Melinda Mitchell and a T-shirt that says “Read books, be kind, stay weird”.)

Meanwhile, the band names are a gift all year around. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Don’t Worry
Seriously, don’t. It’s a waste of time. Instead, organize and resist.

Elephant Crows
If corvids had trunks, would it compete with a beak, or would the beak be on the end?

Faustian Headwound
You sell your soul for fortune and glory, then Satan bashes you over the head and leaves you bleeding and baffled.

Great Ooze
The aftermath of an atmospheric river as fantasy obstacle. Still a mess.

Hot Hail!
Enthusiastic (if mild) expletive, or perhaps just an attempt to make rain exciting.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
