Square Pig in a Round Hole-December 13, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

First things first: Find me and other local authors in the Author Event Network booth at the Roosevelt High School Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 13, 10 am — 4 pm. It isn’t supposed to rain, but even if it does, we will be indoors in the RHS Commons. I will have signed copies of all eight of my novels–fantasy, superhero, sci-fi. Books make great gifts! While we’re on the subject, Not a Pipe Publishing is celebrating their new online shop with a special coupon deal. For the rest of December, anyone who buys a book (like one of mine?) and uses the code DecemberWriter at checkout will get $5 off a shirt, sweatshirt, or hat in the clothing category on the site. Find the shop HERE

Meanwhile, the band names are raining down. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Free Creatures
We don’t know what they are, but we think they’ll make great pets. One per household.

Glare
Why I don’t want to be driving when the sun comes out after a morning of rain. Don’t give me that look.

MSPAINT
Gives me a nostalgia hit for the days before generative AI, back when my kids were making sprite comics on the computer.

Shlump
I always love a good sound-effect name. This is wet snow sliding off the roof.

The Low Lonesome Sound
No less solitary than the high variety, but possibly sadder. Or perhaps more grounded.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
