The Infected extend their control, but New Avalon stands free, although at a high cost.

Marius is missing, presumed dead, but Torres refuses to give up on him, determined to launch a rescue if only she knew where to look. Miranda struggles with the Infected’s growing influence on her mind. Under John’s command, the New Avalon Rangers guard against the Infected, scavenge supplies, and rescue people.

But the Infected aren’t the only threat the survivors face. When a neighboring community makes contact, New Avalon must decide whether to trust other non-Infected or risk fighting multiple enemies at once.

Will divided loyalties, tangled family ties, and the evolving Infected destroy humanity’s chances just as they start to rebuild?

“Wow, I’m still catching my breath—this book was nonstop! It is set in a bleak world filled with violence and tragedy, where the worst aspects of humanity are in full bloom. Yet, as with all extremes, there are pockets of sacrifice, courage, and love, leaving the reader with real hope for humanity – theirs and ours.”

-Mikko Azul, author of The Staff of Fire and Bone and The Rod of Wind and Iron

“In a time when it’s too easy to believe in impending apocalypse, it’s good to finish up a tentacle infestation trilogy with human struggles, nobility, love, and reunions. The third book of M.K. Martin’s Survivors’ Club series gave me the page turning catharsis I needed. I’m totally team Torres, and I’m now hoarding peaches.”

–Eric Witchey, award-winning author of Littlest Death and Bull’s Labyrinth

“A satisfying conclusion, rich with thrills, heartbreak, and heroism.”

-Karen Eisenbrey, author of Ego & Endurance and A Quest for Hidden Things

“I enjoyed the heck out of New Avalon Rangers …Interesting, likeable characters, creepy creatures, good storytelling.”

-Fraser Sherman, author of the historical fantasy anthology 19-Infinity

My Review:

This is a satisfying conclusion to the Survivors’ Club Chronicles, rich with thrills, heartbreak, and heroism. The original 4-member club of Marius, Torres, John, and Miranda grew in book 2 Ashfall into a family with elders and children. Now they are part of a full community, demonstrating how people working together to share skills and resources is a solid basis for rebuilding civilization. This book is packed with daring rescue missions and exploratory expeditions to find potential allies. There is still danger from the Infected, but human communities based on authoritarian patterns may be more of a threat. Our heroes suffer heartbreaking losses, but also enjoy love, friendship, and the satisfaction of trying to build a more humane world.

It was my great fortune to copyedit this book. If you can handle intense fiction about a really gross and frightening pandemic, I highly recommend the whole series.
