Square Pig in a Round Hole-December 14, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

I will be getting my author face out in public one more time this year, selling and signing my books from the Author Event Network booth at the Roosevelt HS Holiday Bazaar Saturday, December 14, 10 am – 5 pm at Roosevelt High School, 1410 NE 66th St, Seattle, WA 98115

I didn’t have any sales at all last weekend, so I’m hoping this event will make up for it. If you’re in the area, stop in for live music by Roosevelt student musicians, and great gifts, including books by me or my fellow AEN authors!

And if you’re only in the market for fun band names, you’ve come to the right place. I didn’t have a theme planned, but most of them ended up being about clothing. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Body Meat
What clothes your skeleton, keeps it warm, and allows it to move around.

Fashion Club
Could be the popular kids all dressing alike, or just as easily the creative weirdos in unique self-designed outfits.

Fishbone
Another unclothed skeleton, the cartoon symbol for stinking garbage, but also the framework that allows our ichthyan siblings to swim.

Summer Sleeves
As the light fades at 4 pm and the cold creeps in, we can dream of dressing our arms in short fluttery sleeves. Summer will come again.

Wearing Hats
This one was meant for me! If I’m performing or otherwise want to be visible, I put on a cool hat, a trait I share with Barbara, the main character of The Gospel According to St. Rage and Barbara and the Rage Brigade. (This band is elusive enough that I assume they have taken their hats off in order to be invisible.)

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
