Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!
It’s my birthday! If you want to make my day as I launch into my 60th year, please consider buying a book! One good choice would be Stories (Within): An Anthology of Stories Within Stories, which releases from Not A Pipe Publishing on August 5 and is available for preorder now. Learn more here. If fantasy and superhero novels are more your thing, I have info on a bunch of those here.
Meanwhile, remember to drink plenty of water, put on sunscreen, and keep wearing those masks! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we look forward to less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
Creature Hole
Whatever you are, it’s good to have somewhere to crawl into that’s cool in summer, snug in winter.
Dormchair Therapist
Nothing like being analyzed by your roommate who is taking Psych 101.
I-90 Fiasco
It’s been awhile since we sank a floating bridge.
Lizard Belly Collective
Both “lizard” and “belly” are fun words on their own. Together, they shine a spotlight on a reptile body part that doesn’t often get a lot of attention (except maybe from owners of pet lizards).
Worry Surfer
More hopeful than doom scrolling–as long as you stay on top and ride your worries, they won’t drown you.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
