Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times club listings for abundant source material!
Last night my spouse read some of my old blog posts aloud, allowing me to enjoy my own writing without suggesting it myself. “Band name” really is one of my favorite literary genres, and they are also reliable writing prompts. I’ve been doing this for almost 8 years and as long as bands keep having names, I plan to keep showing up every week.
I like that it’s not a community of birders, but of our fine feathered friends themselves. Happily, my trees are full of lively bushtits this morning.

I imagine the prophets opening their prayers this way when the nagging of the Lord was getting on their nerves. (Included for the aforementioned spouse, whose favorite clean expletive is “Bother!”)

A little portable shelter is usually a good idea, though a sunshade is less helpful as we head into the rainy season. I wonder if they played Bumbershoot.
