Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
In 1986, October 11 was also a Saturday! How do I know? It was my wedding day. That’s right, today my spouse and I are celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary. Amazing what happens when you keep showing up every day. The promised cover reveal for my 8th published novel, Deep River Rising (Tales from Deep River Book 2), has been delayed until next weekend to make sure everything was ready to go. This is a sweet, cozy romantasy that can be read on its own or as a sequel to A Quest for Hidden Things. Watch for more details next Saturday!
Also, how ’bout those Mariners? And how ’bout these band names? If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Good Dirt
Makes me think of the fine, volcanic soil of Eastern Washington. Add water and it’ll grow just about anything. Not only that, but “human” derives from a root meaning soil. “Earth” means soil. We are dirt beings from dirt world, and that is good. (And they shared a bill with past honorees Dead Bars and The Subjunctives!)
Secretskill
I love the moment when a fun side character reveals a previously undisclosed ability that saves the day. What’s yours?
Small Yards
I have let a succession of neighbors use my yard for their own gardening needs. It doesn’t take much ground to grow a few veggies, and some flowers for the pollinators. Beats mowing the lawn, too. (They were on a bill with past honorees Dragontail Peak and AAIIEE.)
Truth Club
Needed now more than ever, but careful: the regime might brand it a terrorist organization.
Upchuck
Hilarious word for a horrible experience; that’s just how it feels.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
