Square Pig in a Round Hole-September 13, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

After the week we’ve had, I am more grateful than ever to the cats of the internet, and to whatever power in the universe makes band names possible. Let us treasure the small, good things.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Antarcticans
I have been fascinated with the continent of Antarctica since I first learned of its existence in fourth grade, an interest that only grew as I researched Ernest Shackleton’s failed Transantarctic Expedition for my sci-fi rom-com Ego & Endurance. It’s a place people can go, but not a place anyone can claim to be from.

Fairy Riot
This fantastical reference to actual Seattle-area punk history is charming and actually quite punk. Also, I’m always delighted to catch someone in their debut.

Gumby’s Junk
As I am disinclined to consider the private parts of animated characters (which are none of our business), I choose to consider this a reference to a likely business operated by said beloved character and imagine the hijinks that might ensue when Pokey gets tangled up in some noisy detritus.

Pete Marshall & The New Broke West
Is our region like a trained but inexperienced horse, or have we recently fallen on hard times and can’t pay our rent?

Professional Poor Girl
Oh, dear, she’s trying to make a full-time career in the arts, isn’t she? (This might have been their debut, too–on the same bill with Fairy Riot, they also have no online presence. I wish them well!)

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues! (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
