Square Pig in a Round Hole-April 26, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Didja miss me? I took a break from blogging last week to attend Norwescon, where I got to be on panels with other Young Adult authors. It was a fun if exhausting time, but I’m glad to return to the celebration of band names. Just one quick plug before we get to the main order of business: my next book, a cozy coming-of-age hero’s journey and low-spice romantasy titled A Quest for Hidden Things (Tales from Deep River Book 1), releases from Not A Pipe Publishing on April 29 (next Tuesday!) and is on preorder now. If you’re participating in Independent Bookstore Day today, you could ask your favorite indie bookshop to order it for you! If you don’t have an indie bookshop near you, I recommend ordering from Bookshop.org (for any book, not just mine).

And now, on to our main event! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

American Sigh
That resigned release of breath every time we look at the news these days. What did they do now?

Clear the Chaos
Please! I admit it, I am an order person. I don’t like it when chaos people get their chaos on me. I especially resent it when they claim to be my government.

Kissing Book
Romance for Beginners, volume 1.

The Slurps
I’ve always had a soft spot for sound-effect names. A goofy sense of humor is as punk as it gets.

Vanity Project
From a certain point of view, anything you put your name on could qualify. Also that time in high school when  I refinished a dressing table, but that’s just me.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
