Square Pig in a Round Hole-January 18, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

As we enter what I assume will be a new national nightmare (same as the old national nightmare), it is important to celebrate tiny bits good news wherever we find them. Here are two:

  1. My favorite Seattle pop-punk band Dead Bars just announced their third album, All Dead Bars Go to Heaven, releasing on March 21. Preorder on vinyl HERE and check out the delightful animated video for “Give the Metalhead a Hug” HERE.
  2. After a long hiatus, Georgia Dunn‘s funny and creepy web comic Swan Eaters returns on January 20! The heroes are monsters and witches, the villains are literal Nazis, and I can hardly wait.

And of course, we will always have band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Bigfoot Curious
I like the implication of a different reason to investigate cryptids. I am not into monster smut, but will not yuck on someone else’s yum.

MoonBladder
What keeps it floating up there. (By my count, this is my 48th moon-themed band name.)

The Narcoleptic Goddess
If she dozes off in the middle of your prayers, maybe she will also doze off before smiting.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids
At all ages, the most frightening monsters are other people. Middle-grade horror and young-adult dystopia show kids how to stand up and be brave.

There Is No Us
Does this mean we have not yet met the enemy? Unless we get our collective act together, we will just go on being monsters to each other.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
