Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I have received good tidings of great joy! I just signed a contract with Not A Pipe Publishing for a fantasy novel titled A Quest for Hidden Things. This is my oldest book-length project, drafted in 2000, rewritten countless times over the subsequent 15ish years, and revived in 2022 when I finally figured out how to write this book. If all goes according to plan, it will come out in 2024, and perhaps the rest of the series will follow soon after.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, December 21, I will join with authors from Not A Pipe and a few other small presses on the Writing Against the Darkness team, writing from sunrise to sunset to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association–a warmup event on the shortest day of the year for our big Longest Day fundraiser in June. If this cause is meaningful to you, you may donate HERE.
None of these exciting events can interfere with the celebration of band names! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Feral Mothers
No less protective or nurturing for having free-range kids. Have bitten before; likely to bite again. Careful at the PTA meeting.
Little Venom
Dangerous things come in small packages. Concentrated, so a little is all you need.
Makesmehuman
Coordinated rhythmic activity? Cooking? Thinking about thoughts about thinking? (Technically a venue, not a band, but they have an Ursula K. Le Guin quote on their website, so I’m including them.)
Pet Dreams
We dream about our companion animals. They dream about chasing prey. We should all keep our favorite dreams for emotional support.
Pike vs the Automaton
Nice pulp novel or B-movie take on today’s AI anxiety.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
