Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I’m having a quiet weekend mostly at home, nursing a very minor cold. Saving my strength for next Saturday, November 18, 10 am to 4 pm, when I will be selling and signing books with Author Event Network at the Underground Holiday Market at Shoreline City Hall. If you’re in the area, come say hi and do some gift shopping!
That means next week’s blog will most likely be delayed, but never canceled! I will always offer the gift of band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Dead Energy
Two words that seem like opposites. Zombies out there giving it their all, perhaps, or a far-future civilization powered by corpses.
fine
This single word can mean the absolute best or just barely OK, depending on context. The all-lower-case presentation implies the latter, but in a NW Loser Pride kind of way.
Fireball Sunset
A glorious end to the day, hinting at the end of the world.
A Giant Dog
One of my favorite meme suppliers maintains that Clifford the Big Red Dog is a kaiju. Is there only one?
The Sponges
Quietly absorbing influences to be converted into a high-energy listening and dance experience.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
