Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Happy anniversary to Square Pig in a Round Hole! This blog debuted on November 6, 2010 HERE and has been published weekly ever since. As long as people keep coming up with clever names for their bands, I will be here to share the gems.
If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Floating Witch’s Head
I approve of Halloween vibes continuing into November–it’s still too soon for Christmas! The head could be floating because it’s made of wood, but I prefer to imagine a spectral projection in the corridor of a spooky old house.
The Given Takes
In which we are requested to accept the controversial opinions that are set before us. Bonus points for wordplay!
Levitation Room
This sounds like more fun than an escape room, but watch out for floating heads.
Moon Owl’s Mages
More spooky, magical vibes, and my 41st moon-themed band name. I appreciate how the wizards belong to the owl, not the other way around.
Rocky Fall
An avalanche of music.
Shameless Self-Promotion: Today, November 4 is the free Words & Pictures Festival put on by the Fort Vancouver Regional Library. Find the whole schedule of in-person, online, and hybrid events for readers, writers, and artists HERE. Earlier today, I was part of an online author reading and Q&A. It was recorded, so when that is available, I will add it to my website for those who were unable to attend live. I have also signed up for the open mic between 3 and 4:30 pm. I will read from Ego & Endurance.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
