Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Whether or not the groundhog saw his shadow, we are already seeing signs of spring–twigs showing color at their tips, hyacinths beginning to poke up, mallard drakes trying out their pickup lines, and sunset after 5 pm! I’ll take what I can get. Celebrate with me?
Just here for the band names? Here you go! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
When you want to dote on a pet but you can’t afford a dog, so you adopt the furry leftovers in the back of the fridge.
The Peregrine Dives
It’s a complete sentence about how some falcons hunt (at high speed). Could also refer a chain of dimly-lit bars.
A humorous collection of sibilance and assonance. Pogo is done falled into the swamp!
What happens when you hold too tightly to an out-grown belief.
Stetson Heat Seeker
As a hat fan, I can’t pass this one up. I thought it might be a joke about hat-seeking missiles, but this is an actual model of hat! (The band is too new to have an online presence of their own.)
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
