Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!
We went to a show! Star Anna played a mid-week gig at Growler Guys, a nice outdoor venue practically in our backyard. Good music, good beer, and home before 8:30 p.m., so what’s not to like? I also just got the new COVID booster, plus a flu shot at the same time. I hear it could be a bad flu year, and I want no part of that. (I might need a nap tomorrow.) I feel a little more confident about the indoor events coming up this fall.
None of that gets in the way of bringing you the best in band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch to encourage them as we perhaps move into less interesting times. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
First Class Martians
The cream of the alien crop, or the first humans born on the Red Planet? Whichever, this sci-fi fan is here for it.
Lost in the Sound
Once again, our local arm of the sea lends a second meaning. If you get too deep into music while sailing, your boat might go astray.
Shout from a deep valley.
Planets in the Ocean
From a certain point of view, Earth is a water world. And the atmosphere is an ocean of air. But are these oceans on the planet, or is the planet in the oceans?
Rinse & Repeat
Most of us ignore the second half of this grooming instruction, but it’s handy for referring to unbreakable cycles.
Shameless Self-Promotion: Next Saturday, October 1, I will be at Issaquah Salmon Days selling and signing books! Find me from noon to 3 p.m. at the Author Event Network booth for fantasy and superhero books with a PNW slant.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. Next one comes out in early October! (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
