Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!
The local COVID numbers are still high but headed in the right direction. Will we catch a break before the next variant inevitably ruins our fun? I’m not quite ready to commit to indoor events, but I’m ready to think about venturing out in the nearish future. Enough people are braver than I am for there to be plenty of band names in the listings, and I thank them.
As ever, and especially if you’re going out to shows again, wash your hands, wear your upgraded mask, get your vaccine and booster if you haven’t already, and if you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch while we wait for even better days. And … hit the follow button (toward the bottom of the menu) and never miss a post!
Who else was confused as a child by the use of “casket” in literature for a small jewel box? Turns out its use for “coffin” is a relatively recent euphemism. I hope Evelyn is resting peacefully in a well-made silk-lined box.

Meet Me at the Altar
Is this an impulsive marriage proposal or a scam to recruit volunteers for human sacrifice?
The sci-fi villain we deserve.
Till the Teeth
For a superior crop of warriors, don’t merely sow dragon’s teeth. Till them in.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
