Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Square Pig in a Round Hole exists to reward five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Seattle Times and The Stranger nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Hearts are tender at Square Pig HQ, as we have said farewell to our last cat. Not counting a brief interval in 2004, it has been over 35 years since we were last catless. Feels weird. Today’s sunshine and haul of band names are lifting my spirits, though. I hope these shows can go ahead and everyone stays safe and has a good time.
As ever, and especially if you’re going out to shows again, wash your hands, wear your upgraded mask, get your vaccine and booster if you haven’t already, and if you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch while we wait for even better days. Hit the follow button over there on the right and never miss a post!
The High Council
The most senior wizards, serious, intimidating, and stoned out of their minds. Don’t tell the apprentices.
The Lion and the Sloth
Had there been a 6th season of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Aesop and Son might have gotten to this one. What terrible pun would the moral include?
The Phantom Pines
Looming out of the fog, the ghosts of a forest.
This is my spouse’s favorite number of anything, though he doesn’t have cause to make a lot of excuses. With this many, you’d have to make a spreadsheet to keep track of which ones had been used and with whom.
I hope Last Cat has one of these to splash around in on the Other Side.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
