Square Pig in a Round Hole-September 10, 2023

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Once again, blogging delayed (but not canceled) due to one last festival. I spent Friday and Saturday at the Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival, where I sold several copies of Daughter of Magic and Ego & Endurance. There was definitely interest in the St. Rage garage-rock/superhero mashup books, but I was not quite able to close the deal. Maybe they’ll pick up the ebooks after the festival.

Meanwhile, band names still need celebrating! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

Great Aunt
I love a name that seems to do the opposite of rock. A great aunt seems somehow even more ancient and uncool than a grandmother. (As a newly minted great aunt myself, I can assure you this is not true. I’m the cool sister.)

The Hot Rollers
By pure chance, we recently ended up watching several ’80s movies in a row. This fits right in with that vibe, while also suggesting high-energy rock & roll.

Radio Weekend
I learned to love rock & roll as a 12-year-old riding to my Saturday drum lessons with my brother at the wheel of the ’68 Pontiac, AM radio blasting whatever was on KALE. Call-in shows, oldies, top hits … it was an unforgettable education.

Walker Sherman & the Heresy
Even within the rebellious world of rock & roll, there will be orthodoxy, and those who question it.

Wall Drugs
I’ve been to the eponymous Wall Drug! I’m helping my dad go through unlabeled boxes of memorabilia. Last week we found a scrap book from a family road trip we took in 1968 (possibly in the same car as above). We visited many roadside attractions, including Reptile Gardens, a Flintstones theme park, and Wall Drug. All of which I dimly remember to this day.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
