Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
It finally feels like winter in Seattle–my office is the coldest room in the house, so I’m shivering a little as I type this. But I won’t complain, because it is so much worse pretty much everywhere else in the country. If you’re having real winter, take care of your neighbors, wear your layers, throw a water balloon at ICE if you get the chance, and keep warm by gathering your family for a dance party in the living room.
As ever, band names warm my heart. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Burning Urn
I applaud the rhyme, and the firepit vibe on this cold day. (I love catching bands on their first show and wish them many more.)
Crooked Looks
Another fun rhyme with a nice beat. Is this shifty eyes because they’re up to something, or looking askance because you are?
Free Fighter Jet
How the defense industry works: the Pentagon just gives older planes away so they can have brand-new replacements.
Night Brunch
When you get waffles for dinner. Yum.
The Villains Inside
The villain thinks he’s the hero. The hero knows he has the capacity for villainy. Sometimes the story demands he let it out.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
