Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
The nation’s household pets must be doing a ridiculous amount of emotional support this year so far. Here’s to them and the Antifa Wine Moms of Minneapolis. While we’re at it, I personally would be a lot worse off without clever band names, and this week is no exception.
If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Bad Wallpaper
I love names that spotlight mundane aspects of life. Square Pig HQ’s kitchen has green and orange wallpaper with pictures of food on it. It was helpful for teaching toddlers the names of vegetables, but it clashes with the current color scheme. It was easier to just not see it than to replace it.
Church of Brunch
In both church and brunch, people gather around a table to share bread and wine and create community. I appreciate the repeated “ch” sounds, too.
EgoPump
It feels good at the time, but that bubble’s gonna pop.
How to Be Human
Everyone associated with the executive branch needs to take this remedial course.
Nothingland
Where teenagers think they live. I wrote a whole fantasy series that grew out of the idea of a small town where nothing happens and nothing changes.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
