Square Pig in a Round Hole-November 29, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

I hope everyone had a peaceable or at least non-disastrous Thanksgiving. Pie makes everything better! And so does music, especially if the band names are good. Which, as always, they are.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

The Boy Howdies
The pluralized exclamation promises a rowdy good time.

Dog Mom
I always thought dogs were an expert-level pet, but I was comparing to cats. Compared to human children, they might be easy mode. (Also, I checked so you don’t have to: yes, there is someone out there performing as Cat Dad.)

Jealous Dogs
Dog Mom always liked you best!

The Mortgage Lifters
I thought I would contrasting the fun of live string-band music with the seriousness of banking and home ownership, and then I found out they are named for an heirloom tomato. I love it when the real story is even weirder than what I made up.

Pajamarama
An event, not a band, but too cozy and fun to say for me to pass up on a holiday weekend. Spend the whole day in PJs and still go out to a show.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
