Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Seattle has been enjoying cooler but still sunny days, which I welcome as we slide into the darker, wetter part of the year. Fortunately, there are plenty of well named bands to enjoy after the sun goes down, rain or not.
If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.
The American Society of Evil Engineers
I like the serious, official professionalism of this one. My mechanical engineer child has pointed out that popular culture’s “mad scientist” is more often a mad engineer. This organization appears to be trying to shed the reputation of madness, but will accept being the villains.
Animal Adjective
We have so many words we can use to describe our animal friends: floofy, fierce, sleek, chonky… I wonder how they describe us. (I thought I had already done this one, but I was thinking of AdjectiveAnimal in 2022.)
Birdtalker
Many avian species can mimic human speech and other sounds. How many of us can communicate with birds? I gather they would appreciate it if we would just turn off our outside lights while they’re migrating.
Information Society
Another official organization, this one with a somewhat dry sounding name. But information can be about literally anything! (I also suspected I had done this one before, but I was remembering Natural Information Society from 2023.)
Redder Moon
Beautiful but ominous; an eclipse during smoke season. (By my count, this is my 49th moon-themed band name.)
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
