Square Pig in a Round Hole-September 5, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Writing this a day early because once again, I have an in-person event this weekend, the last of the season. If you are in Mukilteo on Friday, September 5 or Saturday, September 6, come find me at MukFest! I’ll be in the Author Event Network booth on Friday from 4 to 7 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm, offering signed copies of my fantasy, sci-fi, and superhero novels

Just here for the band names? That’s OK! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Buried Within Reach
Convenient, but maybe not the most secure way to hide treasure or a body.

Divorced Horses
Cudos for the unexpected rhyme! Splitting up must be difficult for herd animals. Any day, you could run into your ex in the pasture, and you have to stay civil for the sake of the foals.

Foggy Mountain Spaceship
Now is the time for folksy sci-fi. Y’all beam me up, y’hear?

Peaceable Kingdom
Sadly ironic that this band can’t be found. The lion is not yet ready to lie down with the lamb.

Skull Cultist
Another praiseworthy rhyme. Bow down before the mighty cranium.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues! (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
