Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
After a successful day at the Lake City Summer Fest (I sold 15 paperbacks!), I spent the week in the editing trenches, finishing final edits on my next release and few revisions to the one after that. But I was celebrating band names before I had any books published, and I intend to continue for as long the names keep amusing me.
If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Cute Young Man
The adjective “cute”, usually reserved for baby animals and children (including teenagers when you are one), implies appealing harmlessness. Applying it to an adult injects an unsettling element of doubt.
Damnage
Cursed harm in one convenient package.
Lost Footage
Sure, it could be missing evidence. The happy coincidence of being on the same bill with Slipping (below) suggests another meaning. No running on the pool deck!
Randy Mood & the Hook-Ups
All hats off to the pun-infused off-color joke in this perfect example of classic X and the Y naming structure.
Slipping
A useful verb for stealth, declining skill, and accidents. Don’t lose your footage — I mean, footing.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
