Square Pig in a Round Hole-July 12, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

I’m writing this weekend’s post way early because the weekend itself is gonna be packed! I will be offering signed copies of my books at West Seattle Summer Fest on Friday, July 11, 1 – 8 pm, and at Ballard SeafoodFest on Saturday, July 12 10 am – 8 pm. If you’re attending either event (weather report looks excellent), come find me in the Author Event Network booth and fill out your summer reading list with works by local authors!

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

CHONK
I like this relatively recent addition to the slang lexicon that denotes positive, even praiseworthy, heaviness. The all-caps presentation amplifies that vibe.

Fallnorth
As if we were compass needles, tumbling toward the magnetic pole. Even more disorienting that north on maps is up.

Hot Damn Scandal
This is what we need–a monumental enough screw-up to hold the public’s attention and bring down the whole treasonous enterprise.

The Mossback Suns
I hope they remembered the sunscreen; given how pale most of us Seattleites are, anything not covered by moss is likely to burn.

Tropical Fuck Storm
Just the state of the world these days. Where do we evacuate to?

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
