Square Pig in a Round Hole-June 28, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Last weekend was successful, if exhausting, with Friday’s Longest Day fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association and Saturday’s Fremont Fair. I raised over $1200 and wrote almost 7000 words (including a 312-word blog post) on Friday and sold 5 books on Saturday, which was not as rainy as we feared. While the main Longest Day event is past, the fundraising continues through the summer. If you want to donate, you can do that at http://act.alz.org/goto/KarenEisenbrey

Meanwhile, there is no end date for the celebration of band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Blue Healers
While I’m not a dog person, I appreciate the fun with homophones. My first thought was of one of the main characters of my current book project, a magical healer prone to low moods.

Clothing Optional
One of the fun things about vending at the Fremont Fair is watching for bikeless naked people before and after the parade. What could be more wholesome than a guy who has painted on a green shirt and blue overalls to go as Luigi?

Dirt Fishermen
Drop your line for a catch of roots and tubers.

Perfect Buzz
A garden full of bees on a summer afternoon, with or without intoxicating substances.

Yellow Peddled Flowers
More fun with homophones! You have to pay for this bouquet, but you might be able to pick their cousins for free.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
