Square Pig in a Round Hole-May 31, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Although the June Gloom appears to have arrived a day early, we’ve had enough nice days lately to reassure me that for the next three months or so, every time it clears up will turn into a summery day. In Seattle, we take what we can get and we don’t complain. (Kidding. If there’s weather, someone will find something to complain about.) Meanwhile, the music scene continues to provide quality band names about which there can be no complaints.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Noisy thoughts marching through, keeping us from our rest.

Benches
Shining the spotlight on a mundane, useful object that makes life better without calling attention to itself.

Degenerate Fellows
Politely and classily up to no good.

Ninety Pound Wuss
If this isn’t Northwest Loser Pride, I don’t know what is. Be who you are.

The Wedding Present
A beautifully wrapped fancy thing seems like the opposite of punk, which is a very punk way of naming. (This was a friend’s favorite band about a decade ago. I liked the name at the time but I somehow missed them in the listings until now.)

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
