Square Pig in a Round Hole-January 25, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

In my 1970s youth, I quietly wished I lived in more interesting times. I regret that wish and apologize heartily. We are going to need music, humor, collaboration, and courage more than ever. Let’s not make it easy for the bad guys, and let’s do it with joy.

Band names as resistance? Sure, why not? If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

It Haunts
That long-ago wish, and every time I took my rights for granted. Appropriately, I couldn’t find a trace of this band online. Even the live-music listing has disappeared like a phantom.

Maybe Even
That not-quite-committed sense that things could be better, if only a little.

Punktuals
The eager opening act that is bang on time even though they don’t have much to set up and barely get a sound check. Now they’re waiting at the bar for the headliner to show up.

Summer Eyes
Like The Daisy Vents from a few weeks ago, this one doesn’t give up all its secrets until spoken aloud, and then it’s only the highlights.

That Loathsome Devil
Having seen past any handsomeness. “Loathsome” is one of my favorite words, especially for the irredeemables we have somehow elevated to leadership. They might not be the Devil, but they’re on close terms.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
