Square Pig in a Round Hole-January 4, 2025

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Happy New Year! Can you believe we’re a quarter of the way through this century already? I managed to type the date correctly on this post, so we’re off to a good start. I resolve to continue celebrating band names every week. The past 14 years have demonstrated that there is an unfailing supply, which gives me hope in dark times.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Croutons
I like this spotlight on the crunchy little garnish (if best part) of the side salad.

Eaters Digest
Remove an apostrophe from a foodie publication and get a straightforward statement about the process of fueling ourselves.

Frog Mallet
I appreciate the humorous cartoon violence implied here. Based on the song titles and aliases, they are committing to the bit.

Razed by the River
When your childhood waterfront home is demolished in a flood.

Used Fiction
The great thing about a book is, no matter how many times it has been read, the story is still there to be enjoyed (unless the pages come unglued). Used, but not used up.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. The January issue publishes next week! (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
