Square Pig in a Round Hole-December 28, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

I hope the holidays have and will continue to treat you well, whether that means getting the gifts you wanted, spending joyful time with family and friends, or restful days to recover from the year that was.

Last Saturday, I spent the daylight hours with the Writing Against the Darkness team raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. If this cause is meaningful to you, I hope you will consider donating at http://act.alz.org/goto/KarenEisenbrey. We made a good start on our fundraising ahead of the main Longest Day event on the summer solstice, and I added about 4000 words to two draft novels and started a silly Christmas song for my fictional band, St. Rage.  A good day’s work!

Meanwhile, Santa left a bagful of band names! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the subscribe button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Bad Posture Club
It’s important to get up from hunching over a laptop to go slouch with your friends in a local bar and hear some live music.

The Cosmic Neighborhood
As Jesus makes clear, the question isn’t, “Who is my neighbor?” but “How do I be a neighbor to anyone, no matter how far away they started?” Even the space aliens are our neighbors.

The Daisy Vents
When a flower-shaped air intake is breaking news. I love a name that has to be read aloud to be fully appreciated. (I’m always delighted to honor a band playing their debut, too.)

Noise Service
Oh, is this what the guys with leaf blowers think they are providing? Thanks, I guess.

Student Nurse
Considering how much I admire and appreciate nurses at all stages of their careers, I’m surprised I hadn’t included this one already. They got their start when I was a teen, so I assume by now they’ve passed their boards, got their caps, and can be trusted to do what’s best for our health.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my now-monthly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as capsule book reviews, writing news, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just subscribe to the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
