Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I have only one thing to leave the house for today: I’m donating blood. If you’re eligible, I recommend it! Learn more HERE. It’s low-key hero work, no cape required. My superhero character, Barbara/St. Rage, even wrote a song about it:
On with the band names! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Labyrinth Loser
This could be every adventurer who didn’t get the message about the ball of yarn. But really, the loser was always the Minotaur. None of that sorry tale was his fault.
The NowHere Band
Clever name for a Beatles tribute band, doubly so for the spelling. Be present and listen.
Soft Teeth
Soft is one thing teeth should not be. Tongues and cheeks appreciate them, but they kind of miss the point of teeth.
Thirty Seconds to Mars
In my sci-fi novel Ego & Endurance, I thought my fictional ship was making good time arriving on Mars after only 4 months. I recently read a book where they made the trip in only 1 week. Thirty seconds takes the medal, though. I suspect teleportation.
Wind-up Birds
Some real birds make sounds like toys, but I’m glad they can fly without relying on humans to constantly wind them up. That would be more than a full-time job.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
