Square Pig in a Round Hole-July 6, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Summer has officially arrived in Seattle! The heat this weekend will be a challenge, but I hope everyone has a cool place to hide out–maybe one with live music? Next Saturday, July 13, 10 am to 8 pm, I will be selling and signing books from the Author Event Network booth at West Seattle Summerfest. If you’ll in the neighborhood of West Seattle Junction, come say hi and pick up a new favorite book from me or another fine local author. I promise I’ll still meet your band-name needs.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Everything’s Fine
What we’ll keep telling ourselves in order to get by until November. After that, who knows?

False Sense of Security
What we can’t afford to be lulled into. But no, really, everything’s fine. Right?

Frog Squad
Possibly the only ones coming to save us. I, for one, welcome our amphibian overlords. (This was first to make the list this week, and definitely the most fun to say.)

Lo Moon
A casual greeting to our favorite big satellite. What might it say back? (By my count, this is my 45th moon-themed pick.)

Middle Kids
While I sometimes fantasize about enjoying my youngest-kid birthright of being the goofy, irresponsible one, I find myself embracing middle-kid peacemaking and invisibly getting things done. I blame my sister for moving out of state, but I’m probably too old now to start being irresponsible, anyway.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues–next one comes out next week and will feature an opportunity to Indulge Your Shelf. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
