Square Pig in a Round Hole-June 29, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Twenty years ago, I went hiking with a small group of Cub Scouts. I agreed with the scouts that the hike was too hard. Yesterday, I did that hike again and found it challenging but not too hard for me. But I was glad I had picked the band names ahead of time, because I did not have the brain space to do that when I got home but I didn’t want to let anyone down.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Apology Wars
If you’re fighting over who is sorrier for whatever went down, it might be time to agree it was a bad choice and vow not to do it again. Go home and rethink your lives.

Mettle Lark
A bird of inner strength. My mom, an admirably strong woman, loved meadowlarks, so I like to think this pun is for her.

Neptune Moon
I still like Earth’s single, extra-large moon the best, but what would it be like to have 14? The rhyme works as long as we don’t get more specific about which one. (By my count, this is my 44th moon name to be featured.)

Sleepy Cat
There is little more relaxing than watching a cat sleep, unless it letting the cat sleep on me. They are pros, showing us how it’s done.

Tiny Casserole
A DJ, not a band, but worthy of recognition. A single serving hot dish, not enough for a potluck but just right for one lunch.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues–next one comes out in July. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
