Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I’m enjoying a quiet weekend (albeit with lots of baking for Father’s Day) before I head into a super busy week. On the summer solstice, Thursday, June 20, I will be taking part in my 6th annual Longest Day fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association. From dawn to dusk, I will be writing with the Writing Against the Darkness team and encouraging fans, friends, and family to donate for research, care, and support for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias. If this cause is meaningful to you, please consider donating HERE. I plan to generate a lot of material for book 3 in my garage rock/superhero series, to be titled Truth. Justice. Rock & Roll. Then on Saturday, June 22, I will be in the Author Event Network booth at the Fremont Fair. I have restocked and will have all titles available! Preview them here.
I’m not sure I will manage a blog post next Saturday, but I promise, I will be thinking about band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

The only thing that might be cuter and cozier is a pile of kittens, though this pile of goslings comes close.
Classic X and the Y naming structure ups its game with a sweet triple rhyme.
Like the astronauts play! But you can’t hear it unless it’s being piped into your helmet. (I at first thought I had already included this one, my 43rd moon-themed band name, but it turned out I was confusing them with Mood Organ.)
Is this a new-fashioned way of saying old-fashioned? If it is a technical art history (or just history history) term, we really need to do better, but it works well for music, which goes out of fashion so quickly.
We have muscles and skin so our bones don’t have to go naked.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
