Square Pig in a Round Hole-May 25, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Once again, I will be out all day Saturday selling and signing books, this time at Northwest Folklife! Find me in the Author Event Network booth in the Founder’s Court (between PNW Ballet and the Playhouse) alongside other local authors. If you’re attending, come say hi and maybe buy your next favorite read. We represent a wide range of genres, so there should be something you’ll like.

But if you’re just here for the band names, that’s OK! I found some good ones, as always. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Half Giraffe
Is it half giraffe and half something else, centaurlike, or some grisly crime scene of a head and neck on somebody’s enormous pillow? (Follow the link for a delightful illustration.)

Kelp Wanted
A sea urchin’s ad posting.

Permasnooze
Destroy the alarm clock and stay in bed all weekend.

Someone’s Daughter
Nicely anonymous for all concerned, but maybe she wants to be her own person this time.

Space Yacht
I’ve been enjoying a lot of space opera recently, and we’ve already had a few billionaires in orbit. If we offer them a luxury cruise to the stars, maybe they’ll go away for good.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
