Square Pig in a Round Hole-May 18, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

On this date in 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted in spectacular fashion. The ash cloud passed over my little hometown without dropping any on us. On this date in 1985, I graduated from the University of Puget Sound. The next day, I attended the U District Street Fair for the first time. It was 90 degrees and I got chocolate ice cream all over my face and hands like the toddler I will always be. This year, it will not be 90 degrees and I will be selling books at the Street Fair all day Saturday and Sunday. Find me in the Author Event Network booth! We represent a wide range of genres, so there should be something you’ll like.

But if you’re just here for the band names, that’s OK! I found some good ones, as always. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

cussing
Profanity, but quiet, under the breath. It amuses me that there is way more cussing in my books for teens than in those for adults. My fictional teens aren’t quiet with their profanity, but they know not to let it out in front of parents or teachers.

Equal + Opposite
I like how this is a physics reference and also a framework for a healthy relationship with anyone different from you.

Make Them Suffer
Directive to fiction writers regarding their characters. We’re so sorry!

Novelists
My people! A bunch of us will be taking a break from playing with our imaginary friends to sell books about some of our other imaginary friends.

Steve’s Mind
I’m of a generation where I know a lot of musicians and writers named Steve. I imagine their minds are messy but interesting places.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)

  1. Though I did not live in the PNW in 1980, I followed the eruption w/great interest from Michigan…now, 44 years later, I live in Warren (OR) where I can see Helen from my backyard. Enjoy the street fair (I’ll be at the Columbia River Authors Fest in Longview, yakking about my books!).

      1. It was. Met a number of PNW authors for the first time, and THAT part was good. Attendance was poor (hardly any publicity), so that meant few at my reading (and I think they were fellow writers). Poo.
