Square Pig in a Round Hole-February 17, 2024

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

This week I left the house to attend a new friend’s book launch, finally got wired internet in my office after years of putting up with so-so WiFi, and as of today, find myself with a spouse who qualifies for Medicare. How did we get so old??? Fortunately not too old to enjoy music and band names.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Boar|Spear
The way the name is formatted, I see a spear running through between the two words, but then I look again and the line is the guard keeping the boar from running up the spear to gore the hunter.

Kitchen Congregation
This one is nicely timed–my church finds itself temporarily without a meeting space. For a few weeks, we will have “brunch church” in members’ homes, if not in, at least near the kitchens.

Licorice Chamber
I get that not everyone likes licorice, but I would be nibbling at the walls here more than at any gingerbread house.

Mom’s Home
When I was a kid, my mom had a way of driving up and entering the house that was energetic, authoritative, and distinct from anyone else in the family. You knew without any announcement, just by the way the door squeaked, that Mom was home.

Tiny Monsters
The really dangerous ones can’t be seen by the naked eye.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
