Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Lots of good news to report this week: a story I wrote has been shortlisted for a dragon anthology; I got the draft of my schedule for Norwescon, and not only did I get on a panel about songs written for books (with someone I hoped to be on a panel with), the panel I suggested, “Researching History to Write the Future”, appears to be a go; and I got out to see Poor Things and loved it.
But none of that can come before or stand in the way of band names! If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Bug Bath
Either the newest spa treatment or the latest TikTok challenge.
Carousel Museum
I love it when rock and roll intersects with my rural upbringing. I grew up in a tiny town with an antique carousel that was set up for rides one weekend a year. The rest of the time, it was in storage. After I moved away, they built a museum to display the horses and other historical artifacts. But you can still ride it one weekend a year!
Coven 6669
Satanic Panic meets juvenile humor, which seems about right. (I chose this one for a regular reader. You know who you are.)
Having Issues
Could be about ongoing problems, put politely, but maybe it’s about a newspaper’s archives.
Starter Baby
Is this the easy beginner’s baby that sleeps through the night at 8 weeks, or is this more like a starter home: small, odd quirks, good bones, but needs a lot of work, patience, and monetary investment?
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
