Square Pig in a Round Hole-January 13, 2023

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Stranger’s Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

So it seems like the whole country decided to have winter all together. Here in Seattle, we’re recording some of the lowest temps on record, but at least we don’t have the wind and snow some of the rest of you are experiencing. I hope the bands with shows this weekend (like those honored below) draw big enough crowds to heat up the room! But if you’re hunkering down at home, turn up the music and dance to keep warm.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.

Black Smoker
Drawing the extremophiles like a hot undersea vent. Let’s go warm up!

The Buckets
Shining a spotlight on a common, utilitarian object, maybe filled with hot chocolate! (Mentioned in a previous post from 1/22/11, but not previously honored on their own.)

Need Some Fries
Could be a question from a fast-food cashier or an expression of deep want. I don’t need fries, but I will happily steal one or two off your plate.

Secret Recipe
What if recipes contain secret messages that can only be decoded by other cooks? (I have been revisiting my dystopian short story “Emma’s Knives” in which recipes contain coded messages of encouragement and resistance, passed down from grandmother to granddaughter. It was included in anthologies here (2016) and here (2020.)

Skunk Ape
Sasquatch in need of a shower.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
