Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I love it when October harks back to summer! Seattle is seeing clear skies and temps in the upper 70s, but the leaves are turning and it will cool off when the sun goes down. But it’s also spooky season and time for a monster of a monster book: You Were Warned (Convention of Fiends Book 2) by Benjamin Gorman releases from Not A Pipe Publishing on October 17 and is on pre-order now. Find order links and read my advance review HERE. It has adorable werewolf pups!
With that plug out of the way, we can move on the main event: band names. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post.
Hell Baby
I’ll let you in on a secret: this describes every child that ever was at some point in their infancy. Some make more of a career of it than others, but they all have those days.
The Lonely Together
Solidarity in solitude.
Moon Wave
When you greet the beloved shining satellite and it greets you back. (By my count, this is the 39th moon-themed band name to be honored in this space.)
Shifting Moon
(And here’s #40!) Is it edging closer like a shy middle-schooler working up the nerve to ask their crush to dance, or is it edging away from a longterm relationship gone awkward?
Social Meteor
Zips into your orbit, showers you with attention, makes plans for later, zips away never to be seen again.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers.
