Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
I guess it’s really fall now. After one last warm, sunny Friday, rain is likely every day for at least the next week. Just in time for our late-season getaway to Mount Rainier–but maybe we’ll be above the drizzle like has happened before. We’ll have fun regardless, and I trust everyone else will find good indoor activities, like going out to hear a well-named band at a local dive bar.
If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
Authentic Luxury
If you want the nice thing, get the REAL nice thing. The older version might even be affordable.
Exciting!! Excellent!!
While I’m a big fan of loser pride, it’s nice sometimes to see this level enthusiastic positivity.
Look at the Bones
Equally applicable to fortunetelling, crime scenes, anatomy labs, old houses, pre-Halloween neighborhood walks, and the lair of a killer rabbit.
The Red Pears
Welcome the color and sweetness of late-season fruit.
The Unlikely Candidates
Just because you didn’t think of them first doesn’t mean they’re not a good choice, especially if the likely picks reliably let you down.
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues–next one comes out in early October. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
