Square Pig in a Round Hole-September 16, 2023

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

The days still feel like summer, but our maple tree has dropped most of its leaves already and it’s dark out by 8 pm. Fortunately, band names know no season–the listings keep coming through with excellent blog fodder.

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

The Bee Fee Tees
I’m enjoying the visual and aural rhymes, as well as the possible meanings. Sturdy undershirts? Coy pollinator asking to be paid, possibly for a shirt?

Dexter and the Moonrocks
Classic X and the Y structure, and by my count, the 38th moon-themed name to be featured. I remember going with my family back in the Apollo days to an exhibit of moon rocks. Disappointed that I couldn’t touch them, but still impressed.

Mood Organ
I picked this even before being reminded of the sci-fi reference. It could be a musical instrument or the body part responsible for emotions. Brain? Heart? Stomach? Everything gets involved.

Morgan and the Organ Donors
Another X and the Y, another rhyme, and more organs! We have a dilapidated reed organ to give away, if anyone is interested.

Natural Information Society
It sounds so formal and organized, but have you seen Nature?

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
