Square Pig in a Round Hole-August 6, 2023

Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.

Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!

Once again, I’m posting a day late because I spent all Friday and half of yesterday at the Magnolia Summerfest, selling my books from the Author Event Network booth. I sold fewer books than at the Kirkland event the previous weekend, but I liked the vibe of this one better. Maybe it was all the little kids walking their balloon pets–ladybugs, ducks, pigs, sheep, dinosaurs, unicorns, dragons, etc. I even got to wrangle a dinosaur that wandered off from the balloon booth by itself. (If you want to find me at an upcoming event, check HERE.) But the band names never take a break, so neither do I!

If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!

Absinthe Father
Missing parent. Last seen chasing the green fairy. Reward offered.

All of Our Cornbread
I like the cliffhanger. Maybe this is the reward offered for a missing loved one.

Out of Print
Silver lining: might be a collector’s item.

Road Pig
Always alert for pig names! This strikes me as cuter and less aggressive than a road hog, but I still advise all swine to stay out of traffic.

Universal Monster
A movie creature that works on all devices.

Two last things before you go:

  1. I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
  2. I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)
