Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
As of today, I am retired from my day job! I guess that means I’m a full-time writer, a decidedly unprofitable field but rewarding in other ways. I look forward to devoting more time to it. I have no plans to retire from celebrating band names as long as there are band names to be celebrated.
The listings offered up these fine examples. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
Ax & the Hatchetmen
Classic X and the Y naming structure, with a finely honed edge.
Cherubs
If you were expecting fat baby angels, you might be surprised by all the wings, flames, and eyes.
Public Pool
Summer’s here! Let’s go swimming! (And I am not making this up: they’re playing at the High Dive.)
Sister Wife Sex Strike
All the patriarch’s plans are upended when the family gets organized.
The Timely Tragedy
If only we could have more well planned disasters. Be prepared, just in case. (They’re on the same bill with Public Pool.)
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues–the next one comes out next week! (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)

My new science fiction novel, Ego & Endurance is out now! Details here! If you’re intrigued by a hard sci-fi workplace rom-com/survival story in space, inspired by and patterned on the Shackleton expedition, please check it out!
