Naming a band is an act of concentrated creative expression. Since 2010, Square Pig in a Round Hole has been rewarding five favorite band names each week. Winners are (usually) listed alphabetically.
Selection is wholly unscientific and subject to whim, with a bias toward wordplay, humor, and local flavor. In most cases, I won’t know anything about the bands at the time of selection. Thanks to the Everout nightlife listings for abundant source material!
Summer is officially here, and much to my surprise, it is not raining on the first weekend of it! Should be better weather for the Pride Parade than there was for the Solstice Parade. I spent the actual solstice writing from sunrise to sunset to raise funds for The Longest Day, an annual fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association that I have now done for five years. I raised $1600 and wrote 10,000 words! The one-day event is over, but it is not too late to donate if this cause is meaningful to you. My donation page is HERE.
Whether or not you donate, you can have these wonderful band names for free. If you are able, please buy these bands’ music and merch. And … hit the follow button at the lower right to never miss a post!
Aggraux Kouture
This one gets in primarily for the spelling, but I also like the implication that there is high fashion for violent activity.
Future Museums
Anyone’s workplace, childhood home, or overnight accommodation could potentially be preserved for historians and tourists in a later era. Most won’t be, but you never know.
Grumpster
A really cranky trash bin; or maybe an endearment for a particular style of grandparent.
Little Moon
I will never pass up a moon-themed name. By my count, this is #37. Since our Moon is relatively big in comparison to its planet, this must be some other planet’s satellite–one of Mars’ potato moons, or perhaps associated with past honoree Little Planet. (And congratulations for winning the 2023 Tiny Desk Contest!)
Stereo Christ
The one on your right shoulder whispers, “Love your neighbor.” The one on your left shoulder whispers, “Love your enemies.”
Two last things before you go:
- I run The Rage Brigade, a Facebook group for conversation about fantasy, science fiction, superheroes, and music (and the intersections thereof). If that sounds like fun, come join us here.
- I share highlights from this blog in my quarterly author newsletter, The Storypunk Report, as well as news of what I’m writing and reading, upcoming events, and other goodies, including “Wizard in the Mosh Pit,” an exclusive short story just for subscribers. Click the link to check out the archive and subscribe here for future issues–the next one comes out in July. (Or just follow the blog for your weekly dose of band names.)

My new science fiction novel, Ego & Endurance is out now! Details here! If you’re intrigued by a hard sci-fi workplace rom-com/survival story in space, inspired by and patterned on the Shackleton expedition, please check it out!
